Barbara joined NACBA as Executive Director in January 2007.  Her  primary focus is on supporting NACBA's critical mission to advocate on  behalf of consumer debtors and to support its members.  Her work also  involves issues such as membership recruitment and development of  membership services, support for committee work, enhancement of the  website, planning of NACBA's educational programs, and administrative  support for NACBA's legislative programs.  Prior to joining NACBA, Barbara served for 20 years as Associate Dean at Case Western Reserve University School of Law (Cleveland, OH), with primary responsibility for admissions, financial aid, strategic planning, marketing, and public relations.  In addition, she served as the Dean of Students for a student body of around 600 students.  Barbara  served on the Boards of the Law School Admission Council, Big  Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, and the Legal Aid Society of  Cleveland, and was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court Joint Task Force  on Gender Fairness. Prior to working at Case Western she had experience  in private practice and also worked as a staff member in the Ohio legislature. She is an honors graduate of Cornell University  and received her law degree from The Ohio State University, where she  was managing editor of the law review and was given several awards for  leadership. Long before joining NACBA, Barbara was familiar with NACBA  and its mission through her husband, NACBA member Richard Nemeth, State  Chair for the Northern District of Ohio.  Barbara invites you to contact her with any questions or concerns.

Senior Partner of The Hastings Group, Maureen Thompson heads up the lobbying and coalition management work of The Hastings Group. With more than 23 years of experience in the lobbying/coalition field, Thompson is a rare breed in lobbying circles in that she is equally at "home" at the federal and state levels. In addition to working regularly with major committees and subcommittees in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, Thompson has collaborated on initiatives with state government officials in nearly all 50 states. She has worked closely with a wide range of groups representing the interests of women and children, working families, consumers, the elderly, and others and has managed several large coalitions. She has assisted Congressional committees in the organization of dozens of hearings and has drafted testimony for scores of Congressional hearings. Thompson also has extensive experience working with the White House and with Executive Branch departments and agencies.

Now in its 17th year of operation, The Hastings Group (THG) is a full-service consulting firm that specializes in issues management and lobbying, coalition outreach, public relations, Web projects and branding/advertising. THG works primarily with initially low visibility "white hat" clients that require aggressive and innovative strategies to raise the profile of themselves and their issues. The hallmark of The Hastings Group is an aggressive approach to low-cost/high-impact campaigns that catapult its clients and their issues into a place of greater prominence and influence on policymaking and in other realms. Unlike larger consulting firms that use senior members to pitch clients and then hand off the work to junior staff members, THG achieves superior results by involving senior partners and other seasoned staffers in all aspects of its work for clients.

Administrative Director

Candace  started working with NACBA in March of 2005 when BAPCPA was in the  final stages of passing Congress. By the April 2005 convention, the new  legal landscape was a grim and frightening reality for NACBA members.   NACBA  membership surged as NACBA presented two Workshops that July and  September. There was much to do establishing effective customer service  for the crush of new members in the newly created Administrative  Director\'s Office, as we worked with then-Executive Director, Maureen  Thompson to assist the membership and Board.

Candace  came to NACBA with expertise in marketing and direct mail from many  years spent in public relations and political consulting firms. She was  involved in electing local officials, working on Presidential and  Congressional campaigns and various public policy accounts as well as  many Silicon Valley Fortune 500 companies.  When Norma  Hammes was NACBA President in 1998, NACBA hired the political firm  where Candace was Creative Director to design the NACBA logo, and  subsequently create and produce direct mail programs. She followed the  progress of BAPCPA since that time, as the political and social justice  goals of NACBA were a natural fit for Candace. Event management had  also been a large part of her previous work experience and was a  necessary skill for our growing organization.  A fortunate confluence of events led to Candace being available when NACBA needed full-time staff in 2005.

Regarding  the last three years with NACBA, Candace says "It is most rewarding to  assist such a worthy organization during its growth and expansion as a  major voice for consumers. It seems to be a natural segue from  electoral politics to working to support a group dedicated to the  creation fair public policy."
